THE STORY

I would like share this photograph of one of my new toys that I took the other night. This photo was inspired unaisa a very good photographer who makes toys come to life through his very creative style of photography. Taking this photograph taught me a lot. Before, I thought only fast lenses can take a very good “Bokeh Shot” (which had me craving to have a Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens for quite some time now) but then realized that I was wrong. I have learned that if you rack-out (use the maximum zoom available, a term that I learned from Scott Kelby’s Digital Photographer book) any telephoto zoom lens and your aperture at the widest F-stop available while keeping your background away from your subject will give you a very good Bokeh.

THE RECIPE

Here are the materials that I used for this photograph:

  1. Black cardboard.
  2. Christmas lights.
  3. The Lazy Smurf toy.

Camera Gears:

  1. Nikon D90
  2. Nikon MC-DC2 Remote Shutter
  3. Tripod
  4. Sigma DC 18-200mm lens

THE SETUP

  1. I attached the black cardboard on the wall then hanged the Christmas lights over it.
  2. Placed the toy on a table 5-6 feet away from the background.
  3. Attach the camera to the tripod and place at the nearest possible focus distance from the subject.
  4. Zoom in as far as you could (in my case I was at 200mm) and use the lowest F number available ( I was at f6.3) then take the shot.

I learned a lot from this photograph and I am hoping that you (my readers) would also learn from it.

Happy Easter!!!
